There are two types of hardwoods

Solid
Engineered

A solid is just that 100% solid hardwood in various widths, and thicknesses. The installation methods for solids is nail or staple down.

An engineered consists of a top layer of hardwood in various widths and thickness, then two or more layers of softwood. The installation for engineered varies depending on the product , they can be nailed / stapled, glued down or floated like a laminate. The installation is more versatile such as installed over radiant in floor heating, below grade as well as over various sub-floor material. The top layer of hardwood can be

• Dry solid sawn
• Rotary peeled
• Sliced

And the appearance of all three is considerably different.
